Legal Snapshots: Surveillance, secrecy and the State

We would like to invite you to the above event in association with PALG and INQUEST. Topics to be covered at the event include:
1. Recent developments in the law involving surveillance, the retention and disclosure of data, registration requirements for offenders, and other interferences with article 8. Recent authorities will include R (T) v Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police & Ors [2013] 1 Cr. App. R 27; and R (Catt) v Association of Chief Police Officers [2013] EWCA Civ 192.
2. Recent developments in public interest immunity applications, and how to tackle the increasing use of PII by the state to defeat claims by the back door. Authorities will include J v. Commissioner of Police for the Metropolis & Ors [2013] EWHC 32 (QB), and how to tackle PII applications by the police; the Alexander Litvinenko inquest; El-Masri v. Macedonia appn no. 39630/09, 13 December 2012 on secrecy in the context of articles 2 and 3; and Bank Mellat v HM Treasury UKSC 2011/0040.
3. The Justice and Security Act 2013 and its implications for those representing claimants against the state.
